Net Etiquette

These rules must be followed in order to qualify for marks.
They should come naturally to sensitive, mature and expressive LIT students.

  1. REAL names must be used & email addresses included where possible - This is to facilitate the allocation of marks. I am also sure that LIT students of all people will have the COURAGE to say what they think without hiding behind a false name. If you want to say something, you should also be brave enough to claim responsibility for it. People who hurl insults / post nonsense but do not dare to be responsible for what they say are just COWARDS

  1. Proper English must be used - This is to test your ability to present a case clearly and logically. The way you use language on the forum page should be similar to the way you would debate a topic or write an argumentative essay.

  1. Comments should be objective and focused on the topic - criticisms / personal attacks on the people who post messages shows immaturity, lack of ideas and weakens your own position / point of view. It shows you up as emotional, subjective and not reasoning properly - thus having an impact on your marks. It is perfectly alright to disagree. The purpose of discussion is to facilitate learning, broaden your own perspective and find out what others may be thinking. Testing your ideas against those of other people objectively will add more heads to the problem and a better solution / understanding may result.

  1. Criticisms are allowed as long as they are relevant to the discussion - as LIT students you should know by now that the word "Criticism" in Literature doesn't mean saying bad things / making fun of others. In Literature it means pointing out the good as well as the bad. The bad usually refers to obvious errors in what someone has said or perceived flaws in their argument. The purpose is to clarify ideas presented / positions taken and help each other come to a better understanding of the issue.
